Thank you for creating a blog site for Mr. Doodles.
I am the daughter of Mr. Doodles original owner - my mother, Margaret C. and I thought you might be interested on knowing a little bit about his background
My mom passed away in August of 2005 from cancer.
Mr. Doodles was her constant companion during her long illness, and I believe that one of the reasons she survived as long as she did was because she cared for Doodles so much that no matter how bad she felt from chemo or her disease, she still would get up regardless and feed and care for him. On days she was not doing well, he would lie with her on the couch, sitting with her, purring and keeping her company.
A little background on Doodles - he appeared in late fall of 2003 - if you can believe it or not, he was a very small, skinny stray. My mom would throw out scraps/bread/stale snacks for the birds - one of those snacks just happened to be cheese doodles. When he initially started "appearing" in our backyard, my mom started calling him "Smokey". However, Mr. D. would eat just about any of those things she threw out the bread, cookies, snacks - but he showed a particular fondness for "Cheese Doodles" - hence that's how he came about given cat name. Slowly but surely, he gained trust and my mom had him coming indoors where she spoiled him with canned tuna and cream. He put on some weight (and continued to do so) until he reached his current chubby kitty status!
He was always a very loving cat from the beginning - showing a particular fondness for my mom - he was a little frightened of any new visitors to the house, and when I would come to visit (I lived in Cincinnati at the time) it would take awhile for him to come from under the coffee table and visit with me.
When he reached "adolescence" I took him to the Cat Care Clinic in Hyde Park where Dr. Clemons made sure he was healthy, we had him neutered and he became a fixture in my parents home.
When my mom was diagnosed with cancer, she initially asked me to find a home for him. I was working with Save Our Strays at the time and we had a Foster lined up for him, but when the time came for me to take him, my mom became very emotional and it was decided that Doodles would stay in the household. As I mentioned, Doodles was definitely a comfort to my mom throughout her illness - he was always by her side.
After my mom passed away, Doodles went to live with my dad. I think that Doodles reminded my dad too much of my mom, and he would only allow Doodles to live in his laundry room and constantly complained about having to feed and clean up after him. He finally asked me to make arrangements again for him to go to SOS (I unfortunately have some autoimmune issues that prevent me from having cats). It was tough for me to take him to his foster home and I cried - even though I knew his foster, Renee, would do a good job in caring for him.
I was so happy to hear that he was adopted. Heather called me on a Saturday to let me know that he was going to a good home and that he would have owners that had other kitties and would truly give him the love that he deserved.
Obviously, from his blog site he is thriving and looks quite content! Thank you for adopting this most deserving of cats and I hope you continue to blog about him, as I now live in Cleveland OH, and it's nice to see him so happy. Feel free to contact me, if you wish as well - via e-mail: zstrathmore@gmail.com
